Cambria Press Publication Announcement: Giving This Country a Memory

Excerpt from the introduction:

If contemporary literature creates a world of internal complexity, then historically the production of a private realm of contemplation and feeling has been reserved as the exclusive domain of Europeans. The concept of the expressive modern individual, central to Western literature, can be seen as a mark of the ‘possessive investment’ of the white/European subject. The emergence of Aboriginal indigenous literatures, therefore, brings about a renegotiation of the literary contract—recoding and resignifying subjectivity, aesthetics, canonicity, indigeneity, whiteness and the nation, and transnational connectivities.

Giving This Country A Memory: Contemporary Aboriginal Voices of Australia by Anne Brewster has already been praised by noted experts.

This book is part of the Cambria Australian Literature Series, headed by Susan Lever.
