Dr. Thomas G. Mahnken Honored with APSA Kruzel Award for Distinguished Public Service

Cambria Press proudly congratulates Dr. Thomas G. Mahnken, editor of the Rapid Communications in Conflict and Security series, on being awarded the Joseph J. Kruzel Memorial Award for Distinguished Public Service by the American Political Science Association. This honor recognizes Dr. Mahnken’s enduring contributions to scholarship, teaching, and public service in national security affairs. He is President and CEO of the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments (CSBA) and Senior Research Professor at the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), Johns Hopkins University. 

He has served in senior policy and advisory roles across government, including as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Policy Planning  and as a member of multiple congressionally mandated commissions, such as the National Defense Strategy Commissions. A former officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve with 24 years of service, including tours in Iraq and Kosovo, Dr. Mahnken has been recognized with the Secretary of Defense Medal for Outstanding Public Service and the Department of the Navy Superior Civilian Service Medal.

Dr. Mahnken is the author or editor of numerous influential books on strategy and national security, including Net Assessment and Military Strategy: Retrospective and Prospective Essays and The Gathering Pacific Storm: Emerging US-China Strategic Competition in Defense Technological and Industrial Development. He is also the editor of the Cambria Rapid Communications in Conflict and Security (RCCS) Series. The RCCS Series, founded by Dr. Geoffrey R. H. Burn and under Dr. Mahnken’s leadership, publishes books that provide policymakers, practitioners, analysts, and academics with theoretically grounded yet practically applicable research on critical national security issues.
