In Memory of Victor H. Mair (1943-2026)

We mourn the loss of our dear friend, colleague, and series editor, Victor H. Mair, whose extraordinary scholarship, intellectual generosity, and boundless curiosity left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him. For Cambria Press, Victor was far more than a series editor. He was a trusted advisor, a tireless champion of new ideas, and a constant source of wisdom, encouragement, and friendship.

Victor’s pioneering research reshaped our understanding of early China, the Silk Road, historical linguistics, and translation. Yet those who knew him will remember above all his kindness, warmth, and humanity. He touched countless lives not only through the depth and originality of his scholarship, but also through the generosity with which he shared ideas, welcomed new perspectives, and nurtured intellectual curiosity in everyone he encountered.

The photographs that follow were among Victor’s favorites. Taken over many years at the Association for Asian Studies annual conferences, they capture him celebrating books—his own and the work of others—with unmistakable enthusiasm. They remind us how deeply he valued the achievements of colleagues, students, and friends, and how readily he celebrated their successes and lent his support.

This photograph, taken during the surprise celebration of Victor’s 80th birthday at the Association for Asian Studies annual conference, captures Victor as so many of us will always remember him: smiling, engaged, and bringing people together through his love of learning.

Victor’s influence is also reflected in several volumes that hold a special place in Cambria’s history. Over the years, we were fortunate to publish several books that held special meaning for Victor. As the founding editor of the Cambria Sinophone World Series, he devoted more than a decade to shaping the series and expanding scholarship in the field. We also had the honor of publishing two of Victor’s own books: Sacred Display: Divine and Magical Female Figures of Eurasia, coauthored with Miriam Robbins Dexter, and Buddhist Transformations and Interactions: Essays in Honor of Antonino Forte, which he edited. Together, these volumes illustrate the exceptional breadth of his intellectual interests and his lifelong commitment to advancing knowledge across cultures and disciplines.

We are honored to have published three commemorative volumes celebrating Victor’s life and achievements. Each was presented to him during a surprise birthday celebration we organized in his honor. China and Beyond: A Collection of Essays by Victor H. Mair, compiled by Rebecca Shuang Fu, Matthew Anderson, Xiang Wan, and Sophie Wei, marked his 70th birthday. Five years later, Texts and Transformations: Essays in Honor of the 75th Birthday of Victor H. Mair, edited by Haun Saussy, commemorated his 75th birthday. In 2023, Victor H. Mair: A Celebration, edited by Neil Schmid and Diana Shuheng Zhang, was presented during the surprise celebration of his 80th birthday at the annual conference of the Association for Asian Studies (AAS)—the occasion captured in the photograph above.

Throughout his life, Victor brought people together through his love of learning, his generosity of spirit, and his unwavering encouragement of others. We are deeply grateful to have known him, to have worked alongside him, and to have celebrated his many accomplishments. We will miss him profoundly. His scholarship and spirit will continue to inspire generations to come.
