WATCH Victor Mair’s priceless reaction to his surprise birthday party at the Cambria Press Sinophone World Series reception, as well as to his surprise guests!

After the speeches by Toni Tan (Cambria Press) and Shu-mei Shih (UCLA), Victor Mair gave a speech on Cambria Press and introduced Cambria Sinophone World Series authors EK Tan and David Schneider, Toni Tan spoke about Victor Mair’s book Sacred Display, which he coauthored with Miriam Robbins Dexter. Toni Tan commented that even though Sacred Display was not in the Sinophone series, it has won the Sarasvati Award for Best Book in Women and Mythology and remarked pointedly that it would have been nice to have Dr. Dexter present at the reception, to which Dr. Mair agreed wholeheartedly, unaware that Dr. Dexter was waiting outside with his birthday cake!

Toni Tan highlighted the fact that high-quality monographs like Sacred Display have laid the foundation for Cambria Press and led to the formation of many series. Following this line of thought, it appeared as if she was going to speak about earlier events at Cambria Press. She went on to state that for the Cambria Sinophone World Series, there was a significant event that made the series possible and this is where the surprise was sprung on to Victor …
