Cambria Press congratulates Carin Holroyd and Ken Coates on the outstanding journal review of their book, Digital Media in East Asia: National Innovation and the Transformation of a Region, by Pacific Affairs. The review praises the book for not just being “well-researched and presented” and making “timely and valuable confirmations of this new trend” but also for being “an accessible book with rich information” that is “highly recommended.”

Below is an excerpt from the book:
North Korea, one of the most technologically backward and least free nations on earth, had jumped into the digital age. They were not liberalizing cell phone use, expanding wireless connectivity, or investing in digital content. Rather, the national government had opened a large video gaming center, staffed by government employees. The workers were playing games, not creating them. … Off to the side, likely in some unimpressive factory-like building, hundreds of North Koreans are laboring without joy or engagement over video game consoles, piling up points that their managers can fob off to rich, game-playing foreigners in order to fund one of the most repressive regimes on the planet. Such is one of the many unseen elements of the digital age in East Asia.
